Read the original description literally
Check the invoice for the named component, location and included work. A flue cap, a chase cover and a masonry crown are different items. If the description is vague, ask the original provider what was replaced and what was left in place before assuming the job addressed the entire chimney exterior.
Record whether the symptom actually changed
Was the same surface wet before and after the work? Did the volume, timing or position of the water change? Note uncertainty honestly. A comparison of dated observations is more helpful than a statement that the chimney “still leaks” when the location has shifted.
Request a wider cause review if needed
The roof connection, enclosure and masonry may present separate questions. Ask the next assessment to explain the observed entry path and how it relates to the completed cap work. Avoid ordering another component simply because it appears next in a list of common causes.
Keep repair decisions separate from responsibility disputes
Share the earlier scope with the provider and ask about follow-up arrangements. This guide cannot determine fault or warranty coverage. The practical goal is an evidence-based next step and a clear description of any additional work before approval.
