Locate the corrosion without disturbing it

A rust mark on an exterior chase cover and corrosion inside a fireplace are different observations. Record the visible location from a safe position and keep photographs of any change. Do not scrape a deteriorated surface or remove a cover to discover how far the damage extends. The visible mark may not show the full condition of the part beneath it.

Explain water and operation separately

Report recent rain-related symptoms alongside any operating issue, but do not assume one caused the other. If the equipment has been exposed to water, leave it unused until the appropriate assessment. Do not restart it to show that it still works. A functioning control is not evidence that water exposure left the equipment unaffected.

Know which help you are requesting

San Carlos Park Fire Protection and Rescue Service District provides local fire prevention and life-safety education as well as emergency response. Its role is separate from a scheduled chimney service assessment. For fire, a carbon monoxide alarm or an immediate danger, leave the area and contact emergency services. Use the service request for non-emergency assessment and repair planning.

Make the repair recommendation specific

Ask whether the finding concerns surface deterioration, a failed cover, a joint, or another component needing evaluation. A coating should not be treated as a substitute for identifying the condition. Keep the proposed repair and any use restrictions in writing so you can distinguish the next maintenance step from work that needs to happen before operation.
