Read the names top to bottom

Write down the exact business name, any individual or qualifying agent identified, the license number provided and the work the business says it will perform. If the online ad, estimate and contract use different names, ask the proposer to explain the connection in writing. A similar-sounding business in another Florida county can be a different company.

Use the official search

Florida DBPR provides public license lookup and construction industry information. Search the actual number and compare the returned name, category and current status to the proposal. If you cannot match the parties or do not know which category a specific operation requires, contact the licensing or local building authority before authorizing the work. Keep the date of the lookup with the quote. When searching an individual license, compare the approved business name shown in the record with the company asking for your signature.

Name the handoffs

If a separate roofing contractor opens the roof and another business supplies the chimney component, record who orders, installs and restores each part. Ask who is responsible for correcting a problem found at the common joint and who handles any required permits. A license record by itself cannot answer those contractual or site-specific questions.
