Read the outside shape before choosing the material
A chase is the enclosure around the pipe. Its cover closes the top, and the termination above the pipe has a different function. If a previous proposal calls everything a “chimney cap,” ask which piece will arrive from the supplier. One invoice for a termination can leave a rusted sheet over the enclosure completely untouched.
Locate every opening on the fabrication sketch
A useful drawing shows the top length and width, orientation and the position of each penetration measured from known edges. National Chimney's worksheet also separates hole size, skirt, collars, drip edge and cross-break. These are fields for the professional making the survey. The fireplace opening inside the room and a satellite picture are unsuitable substitutes for those dimensions.
Plan for the edge hidden by the existing cover
The visible side finish might stop under the skirt. Ask how the provider will check the bearing surface after removal and what happens if it cannot support the planned replacement. Get agreement on who can authorize a changed scope before the old metal comes off. Do not order an irreversible custom piece based on an assumption about hidden framing.
Tie the order to the Estero project
If other exterior work is scheduled, keep the site address and any Village of Estero building record with the final drawing. The permitting office can answer scope-specific local questions. Before ordering, ask the provider to identify the piping system, confirm the part at the top remains suitable and name the drawing revision used for the order.
Review one off-center opening on paper
Imagine a drawing with the correct length and width but the hole marked nearer the opposite end from the installed pipe. Simply rotating the sheet might put the drip edge or another feature on the wrong side. Ask the surveyor to mark the front and the two reference edges on the order, and confirm the same orientation with the installer. If the pipe is to be moved as part of another project, its future position needs separate system approval and a final measurement. Do not approve a metal order on the theory that the pipe can be made to fit later.
